Cynthia Lynn Phelps, Ph. D., Assistant Professor of Health Informatics at UT-Houston and Design Team Leader for Smilex, brings experience in developing web-based educational materials to the team. She earned a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Biochemistry in 1991 from Hope College; a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Michigan State University; a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Neuroscience in 1998 from the University of Texas Medical School, and from the University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences with research in learning in the health sciences using technology. Dr. Phelps is currently the principal investigator for LEARN, a research project funded from the National Institute for Mental Health, designed to create web-based educational materials for high-school students. Dr. Phelps is the Principal Investigator on the web education component of BrainsRule! awarded by the National Institute for Drug Abuse to Creighton University. BrainsRule! aims to teach kids about neuroscience using web-based multimedia (http://www.brainsrule.com). In addition, Dr, Phelps has been instrumental in the development of The Reconstructors, a web-based learning adventure game used to teach kids the science and technology behind drugs of abuse (http://reconstructors.rice.edu/). As design team leader for RSP, Dr. Phelps and has been responsible for assessing expert knowledge, and incorporating it into the design of the RSP System training software. |
