Joel has more than 30 years of experience in banking. After retiring from Bank of America in 2000, he became Dean of the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Joel joined Bank of America in 1971 and during his tenure advanced from credit analyst to president of Bank of America East with responsibilities for commercial, small business, premier and consumer banking divisions in seven states and the District of Columbia. Joel�s formal education includes a bachelor�s degree in political science and economics from the University of the South. He is also a director of Carolina National Bank & Trust and Avanex Corporation. In January 2003, Joel was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given by the governor of the state of South Carolina.
