Luis T�llez joined the Board of Directors of the Company in March 2003. Dr. T�llez is Managing Director of The Carlyle Group; he is based in Mexico City. Carlyle is one of the biggest private equity investors in the world and opened operations in Mexico in 2004.
Before joining Carlyle Dr. T�llez was Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of DESC, a diversified industrial conglomerate and one of Mexico's largest corporations.
Prior to his association with DESC, Dr. T�llez served as Mexico's Secretary of Energy from 1997 until 2000. As Secretary, he designed a program to restructure the Mexican electricity sector, allowing broader private involvement in generating, distributing, and transmitting electricity. He also promoted a further opening of the Mexican natural gas sector to allow for private participation in the storage, transportation, and distribution of this energy resource. He worked throughout his tenure as Secretary to restore stability in international oil markets and promote world economic growth.
Previously, Dr. T�llez was appointed Head Economist at the Ministry of Treasury from 1987 to 1990 and Undersecretary of Planning at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources from 1990 to 1994. Dr. T�llez served as Chief of Staff to President Ernesto Zedillo from 1994 to 1997.
Dr. T�llez is a member of APEC's Business Advisory Council since March 2001. He is currently a member of the board of directors of DESC, Femsa, and Grupo M�xico; member of the Reforma newspaper Business Council; and member of the Board of Counselors of Kissinger McLarty Associates. In the past, Dr. T�llez has served on the boards of Bancomer and Banco Internacional as well as various governmental financial organizations and companies. He served as Chairman of the Board of Pemex, Comisi�n Federal de Electricidad, and Luz y Fuerza del Centro. Currently he serves on non-profit organization boards including Fundaci�n Televisa, Fundaci�n Unete, and Universidad Iberoamericana.
Dr. T�llez was named Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum and Leader for the New Millenium by Time Magazine.
Dr. T�llez has a degree in economics from the Instituto Tecnol�gico Aut�nomo de M�xico and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the author and co-author of several technical papers and books. |
