Matthieu de Varax is widely acknowledged as one of Europe's leading practitioners in asset finance (with a special focus on transport finance) and leasing. A partner and member of Mayer Brown's Banking & Finance practice, Matthieu also represents arranging banks, investment funds and sponsors in other areas of structured finance such as leveraged finance, project finance and public-private partnerships. Matthieu recently advised the successful bidder in relation to the EA-ALAT Dax Project, the first public-private partnership contract ever awarded by the French ministry of defense.
Chambers Global Guide (2006) observed that, "Highly regarded, [Matthieu] is [Mayer Brown's] main contact for aircraft finance work. He predominantly advises financial institutions." More recently (2007), Chambers described Matthieu as " . . . a popular choice with asset finance clients, who 'appreciate the fact that he listens and works very hard, and can operate across European and US time zones and cultures'." He is recommended, as well, in the International Who's Who of Aviation Lawyers, 2nd Edition (2006).
Matthieu joined Mayer Brown in 2005, after holding senior positions with several other prominent international law firms in Paris. He is fluent in French (native speaker) and English.
