Mike Ashar leads the operation of Suncor�s U.S. refinery, pipeline and retail assets. He is also continuing Suncor�s search for downstream assets in the United States and is responsible for Suncor�s overall business strategy development. The position is based in Denver, Colorado.
Mike was formerly executive vice president of Suncor�s Oil Sands operation, a position he assumed in October 1996. He successfully managed the growth of the Fort McMurray operations, including expansions in the mine, extraction plant and the refinery upgrader. He was also responsible for the $3.4 billion Millennium project, which increased the operating plant capacity to 225,000 barrels per day. Previously, Mike was vice president of refining at Suncor�s Sarnia refinery for five years and has held a number of positions with Suncor�s refining and marketing group.
Mike came to Suncor from Petro-Canada, where he held various positions in refining and marketing. Prior to that position, he was a process engineer for British Petroleum in Oakville, Ontario.
Mike has a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and economics, as well as a master�s degree in chemical engineering and a master in business administration, all from the University of Toronto.
He serves on the board of National Petroleum Refiners Association and Operation Eyesight International. Previously, he was the co-chair of the 2004 Arctic Winter Games.
